Milt Schornack, one of Detroit’s top mechanics in the 1960s, who pioneered the Ram Air system and, as a tuner and driver, became the face of Pontiac’s legendary GTO. Motor City Muscle has been responsible for the powerplant in the “new” 1966 Pontiac GTO that Milt has put together. 1966 was a good year for Milt and the Royal Team. The ’66’ finished the year winning its class at the Super Stock Nationals at York, PA. Perhaps one of the most famous Royal Bobcats was this Grenadier Red 1964, built on November 2,1963, and eventually shipped to Royal on November 8. What happened to the car during that six-day period is open for conjecture; however, it most likely spent a few days next door at the Pontiac Engineering garage before finding its way to Royal Oak. Equipped with the 348 hp Tri-Power and four-speed transmission, the GTO was given the “Royal Treatment” with the assistance of Milt and then delivered with an identical GTO painted blue over to Car and Driver magazine. Car and Driver wrung both cars out at Daytona, rigorously testing both cars. 

The Royal Bobcat GTOs accelerated from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and turned the quarter mile in the low-thirteens. Car and Driver made no bones that the cars were tweaked by Royal, and pronounced the Pontiac GTO to be the equal of its Ferrari namesake in its March 1964 issue, which elicited howls of protest from the magazine’s European-oriented readers, but provided Pontiac with reams of copy and great PR. It was after the Car and Driver test that GTO sales went ballistic.
