Electrified vehicles involved in unplanned events such as mechanical breakdowns, collisions, and vehicle fire scenarios can present new hazards associated with the stored energy in the vehicle’s Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS).

These hazards include potential for chemical, electrical, and thermal exposure and injury for members of the emergency responder community.

Other incidents such as garage structure fires and flooding/water submersion may also present risks to these responders as well when a HEV or EV is involved.

A standardized hybrid and electric vehicle identification methodology is necessary to protect 1st- and 2nd-level emergency responders including fire, rescue, emergency medical, law enforcement, tow and/or recovery, storage, repair, and salvage personnel during and after an unplanned incident has occurred with an electrified vehicle.

Todd Mackintosh has been in the battery business for over 17 years. He chairs the SAE J2990 task force ‘Hybrid and EV Recommendations for First and Second Responders’ and holds a Masters of Energy Systems Engineering degree from University of Michigan.
